Holland more than lived up to their role as favorites against Romania. The Oranjes dominated the game at will and ultimately won 3:0. The team will face Austria or Turkey in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands have reached the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship in Germany. The 1988 European champions won their round of 16 match against Romania 3:0 (1:0) on Tuesday. Their next opponent will be determined this evening in the match between Austria and Turkey.

Cody Gakpo from Liverpool FC gave Oranje the lead in the 20th minute. Another goal by the 25-year-old attacker was disallowed for offside (63). The 2:0 through Dortmund's Donyell Malen (83rd) was set up well by Gakpo. Malen also scored the final goal (90.+3).

The Dutch started weakly, but clearly dominated the game after taking a 1-0 lead. The only major shortcoming was the exploitation of chances: coach Ronald Koeman's team missed several good opportunities.

The Netherlands' first knockout round match was played in front of 65,012 spectators in Munich. It was in this city that they won the European Championship final against the Soviet Union 2:0 in 1988 under Koeman, the Netherlands' only success at a major international tournament to date.
