- GC gets off to a poor start to the new year against FC Sion. After Saulo Decarli hits his opponent in the head with his elbow after just two minutes, the GC defender is sent off.
- For Rolf Fringer, both the VAR intervention and the sending off are "incomprehensible". The blue Sport expert is annoyed: "That's a real theoretical decision."
- Refereeing expert Stephan Klossner takes a completely different view: "The pictures don't lie. For me, the intervention and the red card are correct."
This was certainly not how GC had imagined the start of the new Super League year at FC Sion. In a duel after just two minutes, Saulo Decarli hits opponent Bouchlarhem on the head with his elbow - and is shown a yellow card by referee Lionel Tschudi. However, Tschudi is then asked to stand in front of the screen by the VAR and changes his decision. Decarli is sent off for assault, doing his team a disservice.
A wrong decision for blue Sport expert Rolf Fringer. "3rd minute, start of the second half - for me an unspeakable red card. You should never give one," says Fringer. "As a defender, when I have a striker breathing down my neck, I want to free myself. Decarli didn't even notice that he had his head down there. That's a real theoretical decision and has nothing to do with the dynamics of the game. Completely incomprehensible to me."
Refereeing expert Klossner: "The pictures don't lie"
From Fringer's point of view, referee Tschudi made the right decision with the caution and the VAR should not have intervened in this scene. But refereeing expert Stephan Klossner sees it differently: "From my point of view, you can clearly see in the last slow motion that Decarli senses that the opponent is there. The ball is gone, the action is actually finished - and then he takes another shot."
Decarli was a little unlucky to hit the Sion player's head, but: "The pictures don't lie. For me, the intervention and the red card are correct," said Klossner.
Incidentally, GC were not put off by the false start and managed the feat of winning the game at the Tourbillon despite being short-handed for a long time. The difference was made by Tomás Verón Lupi, who scored the spectacular winner in the 64th minute.
