Serious injury? Major concern for goalkeeper ter Stegen overshadows Barça show against Villarreal

After their defeat in the Champions League during the week, FC Barcelona bounced back in impressive fashion, beating Villarreal 5:1 on the road and taking maximum points in LaLiga after six games.

Robert Lewandowski put Barcelona on the road to victory before the break with a brace in the 20th and 35th minutes. The Catalans then responded to Villarreal's Ayoze Perez's equalizer shortly before the break with three goals after the break.

Torre made it 1:3 in the 58th minute before Raphinha scored a brace to make it 5:1. The fact that the home team had three goals disallowed for offside meant that Robert Lewandowski's missed penalty (67th minute) was of no consequence.

Great concern for ter Stegen

Barcelona, on the other hand, are very worried: Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen may have suffered a serious knee injury. The 32-year-old came down on his right leg during a defensive action following an opponent's corner shortly before the break and immediately fell to the turf. The Barça captain had to be stretchered off the pitch.

Coach Hansi Flick, who notched up his sixth win in six league games, looked on with concern. "We are very happy about the win, but in truth sad because I believe it is a serious injury," said Flick.

A diagnosis was still pending on Sunday evening. Ter Stegen's club initially only announced on X that the keeper had been substituted due to injury. Ter Stegen is the new number one for the German national team following the retirement of Manuel Neuer. The DFB team will play in the Nations League in October in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against the Netherlands.
