Basel had less than 40 hours to recover after their decisive triumph in the "Belle" of the semi-final series against Olten, whereas the Valais had to wait nine days for their next game after their smooth 4-0 win over Thurgau.

It was Jamie Schaub who put the hosts ahead in the 19th minute with his first goal of these playoffs. Fadri Riatsch equalized in the final period before Alain Bircher made it 2:1 in the 50th minute. The 3:1 by Jakob Stukel - his ninth playoff goal - was scored 63 seconds before the end of the game into an empty net.

It was only Visp's second defeat in these playoffs. The fourth-placed team is the only one entitled to promotion. In order to qualify for the league against the loser of the relegation play-off between Lugano and Ajoie, the Valaisans must win the play-off final against Basel.

The second game in this best-of-7 series will take place on Tuesday in Visp. The game kicks off at 7.45 pm.
