Municipal vote ZH Zurich voters stick to the gender star

Voters in the city of Zurich have rejected the "Bye bye gender star" initiative. The referendum had demanded that the administration should no longer be allowed to use the spelling with the asterisk.

The final result is not yet available, but after counting 8 of the 9 constituencies in Zurich, the result is clear: the initiative will fail.

The committee behind the "Tschüss Genderstern" initiative had called for "understandable and legible language" and criticized what it saw as linguistically incorrect forms such as "Ärzt*innen". The committee saw the gender star as an expression of a political stance.
