In other countries, they were killed because of their work on organized crime, corruption or while reporting on protests.
While a particularly high number of media professionals were killed in Mexico in 2022 (19), most journalists were killed in the Palestinian territories in 2023 (24). According to the report, Latin America and the Caribbean as well as Arab countries are the areas where the most journalists were killed.
In total, Unesco recorded 162 journalists, media professionals and online content creators killed in the two years - significantly more than the 117 killings in 2020 and 2021. According to the report, most media professionals died in their home country.
"In the majority of cases, no one is ever held accountable for these killings," criticized Unesco Director-General Audrey Azoulay. 85 percent of the known killings of journalists since 2006 have still not been solved. Azoulay called on countries to do more to ensure that these acts do not go unpunished.
