In keeping with the change of power in Washington, a manager with close ties to President-elect Donald Trump's Republican Party is to become the new head of politics at the Facebook group Meta. Joel Kaplan will take on the role.

He worked in the White House for Republican President George W. Bush from 2006 to 2009. His predecessor Nick Clegg, former British Deputy Prime Minister, will leave Meta, as he announced in a Facebook post. Kaplan joined the Facebook Group in 2011 and was most recently Clegg's deputy.

Meta is currently trying to mend the long-standing strained relationship with Trump, who will begin his second term as president in just over two weeks in January. Republicans have been claiming for years that conservative views are being suppressed on Facebook. They also criticize the fact that Trump was banned from the platform for two years after his supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington in January 2021.

During the presidential election campaign, Trump described Facebook as the "enemy of the people" and claimed that company founder Mark Zuckerberg could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Zuckerberg traveled to Florida for a meeting with Trump after the election in November - and Meta donated one million dollars for his swearing-in ceremony as president on January 20.
