A twelve-year-old has injured six classmates with a knife at a school north of Lisbon. As the emergency services announced on Tuesday, one twelve-year-old girl suffered serious injuries.

According to local media, her classmate stabbed her in the head and chest. She was therefore taken to hospital. The other five injured were children aged between twelve and 14.

The attack took place in Azambuja, around 50 kilometers north of Lisbon. The suspected attacker was arrested and questioned by the police about possible motives and backgrounds, according to the police.

Head of government Luís Montenegro condemned the act. He described the incident in Online Service X as an "isolated act" and an "unknown phenomenon" in Portuguese society. Nevertheless, the act should "make everyone who works in the public sphere... to think about it", Montenegro continued. The Portuguese Minister of Education and President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also condemned the act.
