Military service is seen by many as less meaningful, less compatible with civilian life and less attractive than civilian service. This is shown by a study commissioned by the federal government on the motives for leaving the army. The Department of Defense is examining measures.

The Federal Council was informed of the results of the final report on Wednesday, as it announced. In addition to the conflict of conscience, the report lists a number of additional reasons for the increased number of people leaving the army.
According to the voluntary, anonymous online survey of 3268 civilian service members and 1066 members of the armed forces, civilian service is considered more meaningful than military service. Respondents also rated the compatibility of civilian service with their private lives more positively than military service.
Every year, around 11,000 conscripts leave the army before completing their compulsory service. Of these, more than sixty percent currently switch to civilian service. The Department of Defense DDPS is now examining further measures.
