Following an accident involving a cargo ship, the Turkish authorities have closed the Bosphorus Strait to shipping traffic until further notice. The freighter was on its way from the Turkish port of Yalova, south of Istanbul, to Russia, the state broadcaster TRT reported.

The nature of the accident was not initially disclosed. Salvage work is already underway, it added.

The Bosporus is one of the busiest waterways in the world. Last year, around 40,000 ships passed through the strait that connects the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
