The popular Neufeld indoor swimming pool in Bern is being equipped with video surveillance. With the help of AI, the images are to be used to detect possible swimming accidents at an early stage. The cameras will be installed in the coming weeks, as the city of Bern announced on Wednesday.

Nineteen ceiling-mounted cameras will monitor the three pools and the play area, but will not film underwater. The municipal legislature gave the go-ahead for this system in August, which is intended to increase the safety of bathers. Construction work will begin next week.

The Neufeld indoor pool attracted around 307,000 bathers in its first year of operation. On some winter days, no fewer than 1600 people visited the pool.
