The FDP of the canton of Solothurn is entering the cantonal council elections with the President of the Cantonal Council Marco Lupi and the incumbent Finance Director Peter Hodel. The delegates' meeting nominated the two politicians on Wednesday evening in Bellach SO.

The FDP party executive had only proposed 47-year-old Lupi as the new candidate for the vacant FDP seat. Internally, there were other interested parties. At the delegates' meeting, criticism was voiced of the party executive's approach.

In a secret ballot, however, Lupi prevailed in the first round of voting by 108 votes to 20 against Roger Siegenthaler, the President of the Association of Local Authorities.

Lupi is this year's President of the Cantonal Council and thus the "highest Solothurn citizen". In the general election on March 9, 2025, he will defend the seat of the retiring Director of Education Remo Ankli for the FDP. Lupi, who lives in Solothurn, is a marketing/sales manager by profession and has been a member of the cantonal council since 2016.

Previously nominated with applause, 57-year-old Cantonal Councillor Hodel from Schönenwerd has been Head of the Department of Finance since his election in 2021.
