The construction of a new fire department and civil defense base in Thun is moving closer. Voters overwhelmingly approved the six million franc loan for the purchase of a plot of land on Mittlere Strasse/Rütlistrasse.

10,454 voters approved the proposal, only 1487 rejected it. This corresponds to a yes majority of 87.6 percent, as the city announced on Sunday. The voter turnout was 39.4 percent.

"The search for a new location is now complete and we can concentrate on implementing the rescue base," said municipal councillor Eveline Salzmann (SVP), head of the Directorate of Security and Social Affairs, according to the press release.

The city will now commission a detailed feasibility study. The city council and voters will decide on the loan for the new building project at a later date. The new building will be on the outskirts of the city. This will relieve the residential area where the base was previously located.
