The contractual obligation between health insurance companies and doctors and hospitals is to be relaxed in the outpatient and inpatient sectors. This is what Parliament is calling for. Among other things, this is intended to combat rising healthcare costs. Opponents fear the opposite.

On Thursday, the National Council approved a motion by Peter Hegglin (ZG), a member of the Council of States from the center, by 113 votes to 72 with 6 abstentions. The Federal Council is now called upon to draw up a bill.

Today, health insurers are obliged to conclude a contract with every licensed service provider. Only formal criteria are relevant for this. Quality and cost-effectiveness only play a subordinate role, claimed motionary Hegglin.

A left-green minority in parliament opposed the proposal - as did the Federal Council - to no avail. The opponents warned of restricted care. In addition, the influence of health insurers on the management of healthcare would increase massively.
