Parliament wants to strengthen existing border controls. After the National Council, the Council of States also adopted a motion to this effect on Monday. Both chambers are also calling for tighter controls in the area of asylum.

The small chamber adopted a motion from its Security Policy Committee (SIK-S) without a countermotion. As the National Council already adopted an identical motion on Monday, the Federal Council must now make a proposal for implementation. The national government was in agreement with the mandate.

The Council of States, on the other hand, did not want to know anything about the introduction of systematic border controls. It rejected a corresponding motion by Marco Chiesa (SVP/TI) by 20 votes to 17 with six abstentions.

Like the National Council before it, the small chamber voted in favor of excluding criminal asylum seekers from the asylum procedure. Offenders who have already been granted the right to stay should lose this. Like the upper chamber, the Council of States also wants to restrict the freedom of movement of asylum seekers who are the subject of criminal proceedings.
