The City of Bern's regulations on the climate-adapted design of public streets will come into force next year. No referendum was held, as the municipal council announced on Thursday.

The so-called climate adaptation regulations will come into force on January 1, 2025, as the municipal council wrote in a press release.

The city of Bern is the fifth city in Switzerland to adopt a counter-proposal to the urban climate initiatives, the "Läbigi Stadt" association announced on Thursday. The association launched the initiative.

Bern will now create 10,000 square meters per year by 2035 and a total of at least 140,000 square meters of "climate-effective area". In addition, at least three kilometers of road per year will be converted into meeting zones and at least five kilometers of the cycle route network per year will be upgraded to city standards, as "Läbigi Stadt" went on to say.

The city council adopted the regulations in June as a counter-proposal to the urban climate initiative. The committee then withdrew its initiative in favor of this counter-proposal.

An announced referendum by the "Aufrecht Stadt Bern" association did not materialize. The association would have needed 1500 signatures within 60 days.
