Kindergarten and primary school teachers in Graubünden are to receive higher salaries. This is what the cantonal government is proposing as part of a partial revision of the school law, as announced on Thursday.

The minimum salary rates are to be adjusted to the average in Eastern Switzerland. In addition, salaries in kindergarten will be aligned with those in elementary school. The government expects this to have a financial impact on school authorities and municipalities.

At the same time, however, the canton will contribute to the municipalities' additional expenditure that is not covered by specific cantonal contributions by increasing the school lump sum. In addition to the increase in the minimum salary for teachers, there is also an age reduction for part-time positions and a reduction in the teaching workload at kindergarten level.

The introduction of a compulsory kindergarten course is also planned. These measures are intended to adapt the Education Act to current circumstances following the total revision of 2012. The Grand Council will decide on this in the December session.
