The building commission of the city council has spoken out against the immediate purchase of temporary mobile classroom units. Instead, it is calling for an overall strategy for the recurring problem of a lack of classrooms.

The committee announced on Thursday that mobile schoolroom units should not be purchased until the school space planning expected in 2025. It is therefore recommending that the city council reject the proposal.

In July, the city council announced that it wanted to invest CHF 8 million in mobile classroom units. These are to be used at the Würzenbach, Eichwäldli, Büttenen, Matt and Hubelmatt sites from summer 2025. The containers are intended to help to compensate for short-term shortages of school space.

The modules could bridge short-term bottlenecks, wrote the building commission. In the longer term, however, the peaks could not be covered by the modules. The temporary solutions threatened to become an "unpopular permanent solution".

The committee voted 10 to 1 in favor of the city council revising the proposal. It also demanded that the space lost due to the school space units be compensated for and that traffic safety be improved before such modules are put into operation.

The bill is expected to be discussed by the City Council on October 24.
