A series of suspected drone sightings around the US metropolis of New York are causing uncertainty and investigations in the USA.

"We are aware that New Yorkers have spotted drones in the air this week and we are investigating. At this time, there is no indication that these drones pose a threat to public safety or national security," said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

According to consistent media reports, the mysterious phenomenon began in November over the neighboring state of New Jersey, when an unmanned flying object was spotted near a military facility. Subsequently, more and more cases were reported in large parts of the state, most recently over the New York boroughs of Bronx, Staten Island and near LaGuardia Airport in Queens.

Among many supposed false sightings, however, there have been a number of cases in which people claim to have seen actual drones the size of cars. On Friday, former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan reported, "Last night, starting at about 9:45 p.m., I personally saw (and filmed) dozens of large drones in the sky above my residence in Davidsonville, Maryland (25 miles from our nation's capital). I watched the activity for about 45 minutes." Washington, while expressing concern, also emphasized that so far there is no evidence that foreign powers are involved in the incidents or that the national security of the United States is at risk. The cases have not yet been confirmed by the federal authorities.
