According to an expert, the situation has stabilized after the volcanic eruption in Iceland. The lava is still flowing, but has not expanded any further, Sigridur Oskarsdottir from the Icelandic Meteorological Office told the RÚV radio station.

It does not appear that the lava will soon reach the main road Grindavíkurvegur, which runs from north to south through the Atlantic island. Rather, it looks as if a lava lake is forming around the crack in the earth, said Oskarsdottir.

Smoke could be seen on live streams from the volcanic area in the southwest of the country. The eruption on a peninsula near the capital Reykjavik occurred on Thursday evening, forming a fissure several kilometers long.

It was the sixth volcanic eruption in the area in nine months. These are so-called fissure eruptions - the lava flows out of an elongated crack in the earth. As a rule, this does not result in a large ash cloud.
