Compared to the previous year, 18 percent more food and non-food items were saved from destruction than in 2023, Schweizer Tafel reported on Wednesday. The pleasing increase in rescued food shows that more and more companies are prepared to take active action against food waste.

468 tons of food were taken over by other organizations. In total, 8123 tons of food were distributed to distribution points and organizations such as soup kitchens, emergency shelters and women's refuges last year.

The daily collection of food from 586 retail outlets and increased cooperation with partners from the food industry contributed significantly to this growth, according to the press release. Despite logistical challenges and rising operating costs, the growing demand from social institutions has been met. The foundation plans to invest in logistics and infrastructure in 2025.

Schweizer Tafel is a donation-funded foundation that has been collecting surplus but perfectly good food and non-food items and distributing them free of charge to social institutions in Switzerland since 2001. The aim is to reduce food waste and at the same time help people in need in Switzerland.
