The world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt has opened. The Nuremberg Christ Child, Nelli Lunkenheimer, opened it with the traditional prologue, a Christmas poem of several verses. Dressed in an angelic costume with golden wings, a curly blonde wig and crown, the 18-year-old spoke to the many onlookers on the main market square from the gallery of the Frauenkirche. The Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany and has always attracted around two million visitors in previous years.

This year, the city is once again preparing for many young and old visitors from Germany and abroad who want to get in the mood for Christmas between the festively illuminated stalls with the red and white fabric roofs typical of Nuremberg. More than 170 stalls offer gingerbread, Nuremberg sausages, nativity scenes, Christmas tree decorations and many other specialties against the historic backdrop. According to Nuremberg Airport, several airlines are increasing their flights for the Christmas market. The subway runs twice as frequently on Advent Sundays.

Alongside Dresden's Striezelmarkt, Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. It was first mentioned in writing in 1628, but its roots probably go back even further. It always opens on the Friday before the first Advent and lasts until Christmas Eve.

During this time, visitors can regularly meet the Nuremberg Christ Child, as well as one or two professional footballers. On December 9, the second division footballers from 1. FC Nuremberg, led by captain Robin Knoche, will be grilling Nuremberg sausages for a good cause. The proceeds go to help the homeless.
