On Friday, the Valais cantonal police and the Swiss army inaugurated the largest indoor shooting range in Switzerland at the Sion weapons range. The construction, which cost 33.5 million francs, is intended to greatly reduce noise pollution.

According to the canton of Valais, 11 million francs of the costs were covered by the state of Valais and 22.5 million francs by the federal government. At the Pra Bardy range in Sion, short-range shooting, which accounts for around 75 percent of shooting activities, will be abolished. Long-range shooting, on the other hand, will be retained.

The indoor shooting complex, which is about the size of a football pitch, consists of ten shooting modules. Seven of these are reserved for the army and three for the Valais cantonal police. The facilities are available around the clock, seven days a week and can accommodate several dozen shooters at the same time.

The modulable infrastructure enables shooting exercises to be carried out at short distances of 0 to 30 meters as well as self-defence exercises and the simulation of stressful situations using visual and acoustic effects, the police write in the press release. The facility will go into operation in January 2025. Construction took two years.
