One person was resuscitated after being found, as reported by the APA news agency. However, help came too late for the two local ski tourers.
Further details about the course of the accident and the identity of the victims were not known until late afternoon. Two rescue helicopters and a police helicopter were deployed. Three mountain rescue teams and avalanche dogs were also involved in the search.
On Thursday, the affected area was at avalanche warning level three on the five-point scale, meaning the avalanche danger was "considerable". It had snowed in Tyrol shortly before Christmas, which had increased the avalanche danger to dangerous levels.
