According to the official results, the Mongolian People's Party (MVP) has won the parliamentary elections in the state, which is surrounded by China and Russia, with a narrow majority. In last Friday's vote, the social democratic party won 68 seats in the Grand State Chural, which has been enlarged to 126.

This was announced by the electoral commission on Monday. The center-right Democratic Party won 42 seats. It was followed by the Hun Party with eight seats and two other splinter parties with four seats each.

The commission thus confirmed the preliminary results from Saturday. However, the ballot papers, which were initially recorded digitally, had to be counted by hand in a second round, which took even more time in Mongolia, a country with many branches. The resource-rich country is more than four times the size of Germany, but has only 3.4 million inhabitants. The former socialist People's Republic elected a parliament for the ninth time and is now heading for another government under the MVP.

However, the opposition made significant gains in this vote, which observers sometimes interpreted as the electorate's desire for change. More than two million people were called to vote. Voter turnout was around 69 percent.
