According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an unprecedented number of crises are putting millions of people's lives at risk. It is asking governments and other donors for donations totaling 1.5 billion dollars.

At least 305 million people need emergency aid this year to ensure their survival, the organization announced in Geneva on Friday.

Conflicts, climate change, diseases and displacement are the drivers of the greatest misery, according to the WHO. It lists 17 crises of the highest priority. These include the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the infectious disease Mpox is raging, the Gaza Strip, where more than a year of war has destroyed or damaged almost all health facilities, and Sudan, where a power struggle between the government and rebels is destroying the infrastructure.

Under often adverse circumstances, the WHO is trying to prevent malnutrition, support expectant mothers and vaccinate children against diseases, among other things.
