Representatives of Israel, the Islamist Hamas, the USA and Qatar have signed an agreement to this effect, several newspapers reported on Friday morning, citing the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the report, Netanyahu was informed of the agreement. He had instructed the security cabinet to be convened. Final approval by the government is reportedly scheduled for Saturday evening.
After months of indirect negotiations, the mediating state of Qatar announced an agreement in the conflict on Wednesday. According to Israeli sources, however, there were still problems during the final detailed talks. According to Netanyahu, Hamas refused to agree to parts of the agreement, which also provides for the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip. The Islamists were trying to "extort concessions at the last minute". Hamas had rejected the accusations.
The agreement between Israel and Hamas announced by Qatar on Wednesday evening is to come into force on Sunday at 11.15 a.m. CET and will initially apply for 42 days. During this time there is to be a ceasefire and initially 33 of the 98 remaining hostages held by Hamas are to be released. In return, according to Israeli sources, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are to be released from Israeli jails.
