In Valais, 1448 red deer and 1763 chamois were shot in the past high hunting season. This is largely in line with the targets set by the canton.

According to a press release issued by the canton of Valais on Wednesday, the red deer kill was below target. However, in most deer regions, the target number of culls was achieved.

The plan was to shoot 1775 red deer. This means that the approximately 2000 hunters in Valais shot a total of 300 deer too few. In some problem areas, the game warden is therefore still carrying out targeted additional culls.

In chamois hunting, the number of animals shot fell slightly from 1959 in the previous year to 1763. In order to ensure the preservation of the chamois population, the canton had retained the hunting model adopted in 2023.

For the second year in a row, two-and-a-half-year-old chamois were protected throughout the canton. In this way, the canton aims to strengthen the population of the reproducing age class in the medium and long term and prevent a decline in the chamois population.

The numbers of 309 roe deer goats and wild boar shot remained stable compared to the previous year at 309 and 25 respectively.
