Turkey has begun evacuating its citizens from Lebanon by sea. Two Turkish navy ships docked in the port of Beirut for this purpose, as reported by the state news agency Anadolu.

Up to 2,000 people are to be brought to the Turkish port city of Mersin on the warships. According to the Turkish embassy in Lebanon, preparations are also being made to evacuate a limited number of people by air. According to the Turkish state broadcaster TRT, 14,000 Turkish citizens are living in Lebanon.

The two evacuation ships had brought 300 tons of relief supplies to Lebanon on the way there, Anadolu reported.
