The Ukrainian armed forces claim to have sunk a Russian submarine from the Black Sea Fleet. The submarine "Rostov-on-Don" and a Russian S-400 air defense system were hit during a combined attack on the port of Sevastopol on the occupied Crimean peninsula, the Ukrainian General Staff announced in Kiev. "The submarine sank immediately," it said. The information could not be independently verified. There was initially no reaction from Moscow to the alleged hit.

The "Rostov-on-Don", which was launched in 2014, is a diesel-powered submarine of the so-called "Kilo" class and can fire cruise missiles, among other things.

In recent months, Ukraine has hit the Russian Black Sea fleet hard with repeated attacks on the war ports of occupied Crimea, forcing the remaining ships to withdraw to other, more distant ports in the Black Sea.
