US President-elect Donald Trump wants to use the military for mass deportations of illegal immigrants. In a reaction to a corresponding post by a right-wing activist on the Truth Social platform, which he co-founded, the Republican wrote: "True!!!" The activist had reported that Trump's government wanted to declare a state of emergency and then deploy the military.

Trump wants to make mass deportations a priority in his second term. "On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history," he said a few days before the US election. The USA is an "occupied country", he warned.

Trump wants to start with illegal immigrants. The claim that the USA was being overrun by criminal migrants was a central point of his election campaign.

However, courts could potentially thwart or delay Trump's plans for mass deportations. In addition, he would probably need the approval of the US Congress for larger and more expensive projects. There, Trump's Republicans are likely to have a narrow majority in both chambers.

Trump (78) is due to be sworn in for his second term as president on January 20.
