The Unia trade union initiative calls for a minimum wage of CHF 22 per hour for all employees working in the canton. It demands that the social partners adapt the collective employment contracts to the minimum wage provisions within a certain period of time. Exceptions are provided for internships, apprenticeships, vacation jobs, family businesses and in agriculture.
The initiative was supported by the SP and the Greens, while the remaining parties and the government recommended that it be rejected. Voters in the neighboring canton of Solothurn will also decide on a minimum wage this Sunday. The cantons of Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Ticino and Basel-Stadt have already introduced a minimum wage.
