Following protests in Syria, the transitional government in Damascus has warned against disseminating media content that exacerbates division and discrimination among the country's various groups and minorities.

"In order to strengthen national unity and preserve the Syrian fabric with all its components", it is strictly forbidden to disseminate content of a "sectarian nature", the Ministry of the Interior announced. This refers to content that reinforces division, prejudice or conflict between different groups, often based on religion, ethnicity or political beliefs. It is not clear what measures the new leadership intends to use to control and enforce the ban.

There had previously been protests in parts of Syria. The background to this was a video circulated online that purported to show the desecration of an Alawite shrine in the city of Aleppo. According to the new leadership in Damascus, the "old video" was deliberately distributed on the internet to cause unrest.
