Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expects progress towards an invitation to join the NATO military alliance after the US elections in early November. "Not because of the change of president, but because the USA's attention is now focused on the elections," said the head of state, according to a report by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. The USA now wanted to avoid unnecessary risks and was therefore holding back with clear statements.

The Ukrainian president assumes that there is already a broad consensus regarding a NATO invitation to his country during the war with Russia. France, Great Britain and Italy would grant Kiev's request.

"With regard to Germany's reaction, the situation today depends to a large extent on the United States," said Selenskyj. A coordinated position between Washington and Berlin on the Ukraine accession issue could also convince skeptics such as Hungary and Slovakia. "We all have to work a lot with the German side," said the President. But the USA would tip the scales. The invitation would only be extended to Ukraine within its 1991 borders.

A new president will be elected in the United States on November 5.
