The US government is planning to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia with a loan of around 20 billion US dollars (around 18.5 billion euros). "I would say that we will probably be able to contribute 20 billion dollars to the G7 countries' 50 billion package," said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Specifically, this concerns a loan of 50 billion US dollars, which the seven major Western industrialized nations (G7) agreed at a summit in June and which is secured by interest income from frozen Russian assets.

Yellen: Loan package is 99 percent complete

Yellen went on to say that a little more work was needed before the final details could be finalized. "Let me say that we're 99 percent there, and it's just a matter of nailing down a few relatively small things."

She emphasized that the source of funding for this Ukraine assistance is not the American taxpayer. "What's happening here is that Russia is paying for this support," she said. The parties involved are expected to reach an agreement by the end of the week.

The EU Parliament in Strasbourg had previously approved a loan of up to 35 billion euros for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. The UK has also announced that it will contribute a loan of 2.26 billion pounds (around 2.71 billion euros) to the package.

The G7 includes the USA, Canada, the UK, Italy, Japan, France and Germany. Representatives of the EU also take part in meetings of the G7 group.

In Washington, Yellen also announced that new sanctions would be imposed next week against supporters of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. However, she did not give any details.
