Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his visit to the US base in Ramstein, Germany, on Thursday for talks on further arms deliveries. "The key task for Ukraine is to strengthen our air defense, to at least enable Ukraine to keep the Russian air force away from our cities and borders," the head of state said in his daily video message. In addition to talks in the so-called Ramstein format, bilateral talks at defense minister level are also planned.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had previously announced his trip to Ramstein on Platform X. According to media reports, the announcement of a final new package of US military aid before the change of power in Washington on January 20 is also expected. According to Selensky, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov is already in Germany for talks. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas are also expected to attend.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for almost three years with Western help. The so-called Ramstein meetings have been taking place regularly since 2022 and are organized by the USA.
