Following the fatal attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, the death toll has risen to four. According to information from security circles, 41 people were also seriously injured. The "Bild" newspaper and other media reported a total of more than 200 injured. There had previously been talk of two deaths, including a small child. The police did not initially respond to a request for comment. The previous evening, there had initially been talk of more than 60 injured.

A car crashed into the group of people at a Christmas market in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt early on Friday evening. Minister President Reiner Haseloff spoke of an "inhuman attack" and expressed his "deep shock". The police were initially cautious on Saturday morning about whether they considered the attack to be an attack. They were still investigating, they said.

The suspect arrested that evening is a doctor from Bernburg who comes from Saudi Arabia. The man is known as an activist critical of Islam. According to the German Press Agency, the 50-year-old doctor, who has lived in Germany since 2006, describes himself as an ex-Muslim.
