Following the tragedy in Magdeburg, authorities in Austria have tightened security measures at some Christmas markets. In Linz, it was reported that further "technical safety measures" were in place. There are now more police patrols in several federal states.

In Vienna, security measures were "intensified at a high level", according to the police. They pointed out that Austria has been on terror alert level 4 since October 2023 - following the terrorist attack on Israel. This is associated with increased security precautions. Plainclothes officers are on duty in many places.

In general, Christmas markets are already well protected, according to the Ministry of the Interior. This was demonstrated by an incident in Vienna on Friday, when an armed person with Finnish citizenship was arrested.
