Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz offers US President-elect Donald Trump "to continue the decades of successful cooperation between the governments of the two countries". In their first telephone conversation since the US election, Scholz also personally congratulated Trump on his election victory, according to government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. In their conversation on Sunday evening, both agreed to work together towards a return to peace in Europe. They also discussed German-American relations and the current geopolitical challenges.

In the ARD program Caren Miosga, Scholz said with regard to the cooperation with Trump: "I am never naive, but always a little fearless." During his first term in office, Trump had massively criticized Germany for what he saw as insufficient military spending, the German trade surplus and the German-Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

Scholz had already offered Trump a reliable partnership on Wednesday immediately after his election victory. However, he also made it clear that he was prepared for changes in the relationship with the USA.
