The Russian army says it is recapturing Ukrainian-occupied villages in the Kursk region. Ukrainian soldiers had abandoned their positions near the village of Lyubimovka for fear of being surrounded and had fled.

This was reported by the Russian state news agency Tass, citing military sources in Moscow. Shells were dropped on the fleeing Ukrainians by drones.

The retreat took place near the village of Tolsty Lug. The Russian Telegram channel Mash reported high Ukrainian casualties. There was talk of around 50 dead and dozens of prisoners. However, the Russian information cannot be independently verified. There was no confirmation from the Ukrainian side.

Moscow deploys 50,000 soldiers

However, reports in recent days indicate that the Ukrainian troops are being pushed out of the area in Russia that was conquered at the beginning of August at an ever faster rate. The Russian tactic of deploying around 50,000 soldiers aims to divide the Ukrainian occupied territory into several cauldrons.

With the surprise invasion of the Russian region of Kursk at the beginning of August, Ukraine brought the ground war back to Russia for the first time. The political aim was to have a piece of Russia in hand as a bargaining chip for future negotiations. The offensive is controversial among military experts because Ukraine lacked defenders in the east, for example. Russian troops have been advancing in the Donbass for weeks.
