According to official reports, Russian air defense intercepted numerous drones targeting Moscow during the night. Sergei Sobyanin, mayor of the city of twelve million people, wrote on his Telegram channel that the air defenses had shot down more than two dozen drones over various districts of the city. No injuries were initially reported. The emergency services were deployed on site. Two airports in the capital, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, have suspended operations due to the attacks, the state news agency Tass quoted the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya as saying.

According to Sobyanin, a total of nine drones were shot down in the Ramenskoye district in south-eastern Moscow. A further 16 drones were shot down over other districts. The information could not be independently verified.

At the beginning of September, Ukraine caused serious damage in and around Moscow for the first time in more than two and a half years of war with a massive drone attack. In the south-east of the metropolis of Moscow, a hit caused a fire in the large Kapotnya refinery - just 16 kilometers from the Kremlin as the crow flies. Until then, Ukrainian drone flights against Moscow had been rather symbolic and caused hardly any damage.

Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukraine itself has been exposed to Russian airstrikes every night, targeting important energy infrastructure, among other things.
