The French right-wing extremist Jean-Marie Le Pen has been laid to rest in Brittany. The founder of the Front National (FN) party, which has since been renamed Rassemblement National, died on Tuesday at the age of 96.

Around 100 police officers were deployed for the funeral. The authorities had previously imposed a ban on demonstrations, fearing political rallies by opponents and supporters of Le Pen. On Tuesday, hundreds of people greeted the news of Le Pen's death with cheers and fireworks.
