Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the USA has risen sharply. This is according to preliminary data from the human rights organization Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

According to the data, the number of anti-Semitic acts tripled compared to the same period last year - and thus rose to the highest figure ever recorded by the non-governmental organization within one year since it began recording them in 1979.

In total, more than 10,000 incidents classified as antisemitic were reported to the ADL between October 7, 2023 and September 24, 2023. In comparison, there were reportedly 3,325 cases in the same period last year. The ADL counted around 150 physical attacks, a good 1,800 cases of vandalism and more than 8,000 verbal or written attacks.

"We were confronted with a shocking number of anti-Semitic threats and witnessed calls for more violence against Israelis and Jews everywhere," said ADL head Jonathan Greenblatt.

At least 1,200 anti-Semitic incidents were reported to have occurred at US universities. There had been heated protests there last year. By comparison, the ADL reported around 200 anti-Semitic incidents at US universities in the same period last year. The number of bomb threats against Jewish institutions such as synagogues has also risen dramatically, from 81 to more than 1,000.

The Anti-Defamation League, as the organization's name translates, has its headquarters in New York. It has been fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice since it was founded in 1913.
