Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have congratulated Donald Trump on his return to the White House.

"It is clearly not the result we had hoped for," they wrote in a statement. But in a democracy, it is also about being able to admit "that our views do not always prevail".

The Obamas pointed out that turbulence in recent years, such as the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent price rises, made it difficult for democratic governments around the world. "And last night showed that America is not immune." The good news is that these problems can be solved - but only if people listen to each other and adhere to the principles of the constitution and democracy.

Barack and Michelle Obama have made several appearances at campaign events for Kamala Harris in recent weeks. However, the Democratic presidential candidate clearly lost to Donald Trump. The Republican had replaced Obama in the White House during his first term in office.
