Senator Marco Rubio, who is known for his firm stance on China and Iran, could become the next Secretary of State of the United States, according to recent media reports. This information comes from the "New York Times" and the broadcaster NBC, which cite well-informed sources.
President-elect Donald Trump is said to have decided in favor of his party colleague Rubio, although he could still change his mind. Rubio, who has been a member of the US Senate since 2010, tried unsuccessfully to become the Republican presidential candidate in 2016. In the primary campaign, he was defeated by Trump, who made disparaging remarks about him at the time.
In recent days, Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany, has also been touted as a possible candidate for Secretary of State. Rubio was also on the shortlist for the vice presidency this year before Trump opted for J.D. Vance.
Rubio's political career and ambitions
Marco Rubio has served in the US Senate for over a decade, during which time he has made a name for himself as a determined politician. His attempt to become a presidential candidate in 2016 failed in the primary campaign against Trump. Despite this defeat, Rubio remained a prominent figure in the Republican Party.
Candidates for the post of Secretary of State
In addition to Rubio, Richard Grenell was also considered as a potential Secretary of State. Grenell, who served as US ambassador to Germany, was another prominent name being floated for the post in recent days. However, the final decision lies with Trump, who could still change his mind.
