The former President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, has lamented a "leadership vacuum" in Europe. "The Franco-German leadership is weakened," said the former Italian Prime Minister at an award ceremony in Milan.

"But I don't see any other leadership that would be able to lead Europe into a common future. There is a leadership vacuum, but we have to be patient and wait for the outcome of the elections in Germany."

Draghi was referring to the end of the traffic light coalition in Berlin, which is why new elections are likely to be held in Germany in February. In addition, Michel Barnier, the head of government appointed by President Emmanuel Macron, failed last week in Paris. Until a new government is formed, the former EU Commissioner is only in office on a caretaker basis. It is unclear how long this will last.

Draghi was head of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019. He later headed the government in his home country in 2021/22. A few weeks ago, he published a report on the future of the European Union on behalf of the then European Commission. In his speech, he spoke of "difficult moments" for Europe. At the same time, Draghi called on people to be optimistic in order to achieve something. "Because if you are pessimistic, you stay at home."
