Police minister demands dismissal of Baharav-Miara

The case is further fueling the long-standing conflict between the right-wing government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli judiciary. At the heart of the matter is the question of how far the judiciary is allowed to set limits on a democratically elected government.

The far-right police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir accused Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara of interfering in politics and crossing a "red line" with her arrest on Monday. He demanded her release. Ben-Gvir had only appointed the prison chief at the beginning of the year.

Baharav-Miara again called for Ben-Gvir's release

The lawyer Baharav-Miara is a thorn in the side of the government due to investigations against Netanyahu and those close to his government. Baharav-Miara is also said to have suggested Ben-Gvir's dismissal for unlawful interference in police matters.
