In a new attack on the Syrian capital Damascus, Israel has killed at least 15 people and injured 16 others, according to the Syrian state agency Sana. The attacks were directed against two residential buildings, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It even reported 17 fatalities, including civilians.
The Israeli army stated that the attacks were directed against facilities belonging to the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization. This organization had been involved in the massacre in Israel on 7 October 2023 and supports Hezbollah, which carries out attacks on Israel from Lebanon. It was not initially possible to independently verify the claims made by both sides.
Since the beginning of the war in the Middle East over a year ago, the Israeli army has intensified its attacks on targets of Hezbollah and other militias loyal to Iran in Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has recorded around 150 such attacks since the beginning of the year.
Escalation of violence in the Middle East
The latest attacks are part of an ongoing escalation of violence in the region. Israel sees itself threatened by the activities of Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah and is responding with military means. Tensions between the parties involved continue to rise, while the international community is trying to de-escalate the situation.
