To overcome the crises in the country, Iranian President Massud Peseshkian, who is considered a moderate, wants to change course politically and reduce tensions with the outside world. "To avoid unnecessary trouble, we should not constantly quarrel with the world," Peseshkian said during a speech in the eastern Iranian city of Bodschnurd, according to the Iranian state news agency Irna.

The country should therefore take a new political course in the national interest. Military action should also be limited to defending territorial integrity and avoiding conflicts.

The background to Peseshkian's appeal is the country's desolate political and economic situation. Critics see the confrontational foreign policy as the main reason for the sanctions against Iran. In addition, the billions in financial and logistical support for Arab militias as part of the "resistance axis" against Israel has proven to be a strategic miscalculation. According to the critics, the Iranian people must now suffer for this.

Oil-rich Iran is currently in the midst of its worst financial crisis. The national currency, the rial, is in free fall and is reaching new record lows every day.

High inflation is forcing even wealthy Iranians to make drastic savings. Added to this is an energy crisis that leads to frequent power and gas outages across the country during the cold winter months. Not only private households are affected, but also public institutions such as hospitals and schools as well as important factories.

Critics see the only way out of the misery as a political change of course - especially towards arch-enemies Israel and the USA, but also towards Europe.
