In Iran, crowds of people have celebrated the anniversary of the 1979 revolution at state-organized rallies. Images on state television on Monday showed parades in Tehran and the provinces, with participants waving the flag of the Islamic Republic, among other things. Hundreds of thousands to several million people traditionally gather across the country to mark the anniversary.

In February 1979, an uprising led by revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led to the overthrow of the monarchy. In the same year, Iranian students occupied the US embassy in Tehran, which led to the severing of diplomatic relations. Since then, there have been repeated dangerous military tensions with the USA and Israel - most recently last year. A large part of the population is indifferent to the celebrations.

Iran is in the midst of a severe economic crisis. This is also due to tough sanctions imposed by the West, partly because of its controversial nuclear program. US President Donald Trump recently signaled Tehran's willingness to talk. However, Head of State Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on strategic issues, initially rejected negotiations with the USA. The Iranian currency fell to a new record low.
